Giant Lightbulb
2026
City of Anaheim / Anaheim SEC
We were asked to develop a giant interactive lightbulb for the City of Anaheim's new Sustainability Education Center. Designed for visitors of all ages, including children and school groups, the installation turns cycling into a clear, immediate demonstration of energy generation.
The lightbulb reacts in real time to 10 mounted bikes, each fitted with individual current monitoring. As visitors pedal, the system measures the energy they are generating and instantly translates it into light: the harder they cycle, the more of the giant bulb illuminates.
The installation is made up of 528 individually controllable lightbulbs driven by a custom modular control system, developed specifically for safe, reliable public interaction. A separate live energy display shows how much power visitors are producing and compares it with real-world appliances, helping younger audiences connect physical effort with everyday electricity use.
The lightbulb is part of the Sustainability Education Center's permanent interactive exhibition, open to the public from 2026.
